The “Die-Off” Symptoms When Leveling-Up
Why does it sometimes feel like everything gets worse before it gets better?
When I was battling chronic recurring infections with little relief from conventional medicine, I was searching for any kind of cure.
I had tried things like colon cleanses, growing my own cultures in my tiny studio apartment, and, for a two-week period, drinking one beer every morning on an empty stomach.. When you’re desperate for healing, you’ll try anything.
Nothing was helping.
I eventually found myself face to face with a practitioner who made me feel heard for the first time.
Together, we worked on a plan to move toward healing my gut. It was an intense plan. Like, only leafy greens and broth for a long time intense. But, I was willing to do anything for relief.
She warned me when we began that I might experience “die-off symptoms,” which is when the body is releasing toxins and pathogens at such a rapid rate that it can cause flu-like symptoms.
Basically, everything was about to get so much worse before it got better.
And she was right. By day three of the protocol I was covered in a rash, running a fever, and laid up on the couch. I kept reminding myself I just need to get through this uncomfortable period and healing would be on the other side.
Once the die-off symptoms stopped, I came out of the fog and started to see some improvements.
I’ve noticed this same thing happens when we are healing on a soul level as well. Maybe not the fever and rash, but a metaphorical rash in the form of everything rising to the surface to be dealt with.
The Die-Off Symptoms in Leveling Up Spiritually
Just like those unseen toxins can wreak havoc on our internal system, our limiting beliefs and old patterns often keep us stuck living in total misalignment.
When we want to level up — whether it’s moving into deeper personal power, pursuing our soul’s calling, or even just changing how we approach life — we might come up against those old beliefs and stories.
Like those toxins and pathogens, the next layer of stuff will rise to the surface to be released.
And it can be really uncomfortable.
We might even feel like we’re stuck between levels: one foot in, and one foot out. Like in Tangled, when Rapunzel escapes the tower — she is so excited to finally be free, but also really conflicted and afraid.
That's because we are more comfortable with what's familiar, even if what's familiar is being trapped in a dark tower wishing we were free.
Freedom will cost us the comfort, at least at first.
So, if you feel like you’re straddling two worlds and it’s an intense struggle to let go, you’re not doing it wrong.
We have to face the discomfort of moving forward, of meeting the stuff we thought we healed (again), so we can truly embody the next version of us and what it will require.
The universe is asking us if we’re truly ready..
And that will take as long as it takes.
This phase often involves:
Unraveling limiting beliefs and old ways of living
Facing our inner shadows and past pain
Shifting our priorities and mindset
Creating healthy boundaries for ourselves
It can feel like everything is crumbling as we meet ourselves and begin shedding layers and layers to allow deep transformation. At the same time, transformation can be disorienting. Often our old patterns will emerge as a way to keep us safe when everything feels so unstable. As you face some of your patterns, remember to thank them for wanting to protect you.
During this “die-off” phase of healing and leveling-up it’s so important to find ways to remain grounded and to care for ourselves. It’s not the time to go full speed ahead. It’s the time to process things and be gentle and compassionate with ourselves.
If you are finding yourself in this phase, remind yourself that healing is on the other side of the discomfort.
